Updated: Jan 11, 2023

Create your itsy-bitsy idol!

UPDATE! Proper Sound is currently closed for a NY break: please post/deliver your correctly-sized (5x3.5cm portrait) piece to 130 Park Lane, Macclesfield, SK11 6UB or email us a piece to print out! Deadline Monday Jan 23rd!

Explore different mediums and have your portrait art exhibited in a gallery in Macc! The Doll’s House Art Gallery and Proper Sound shop and cafe/bar on Chestergate in Macclesfield are working together to bring you the opportunity to create a portrait in any medium for our Portrait Open Call. We're aiming to install loads of framed portraits in the 1:12 scale Gallery on Park Lane in 2023! You can either collect a frame from Proper Sound during their opening hours, or simply send a piece the right size to the Park Lane address below and we'll frame it for you.

First: Choose Your Idol!

Who do you admire? Who do you think is brilliant, strong or talented? Be they famous, family, even a pet; who deserves to be commemorated in a piece of art?

Second: Explore Different Media!

We suggest that you try to create small, but if you're really struggling, you could shrink a larger piece of art digitally, then leave it as is, draw over it or add more. But there’s no need to decide the medium for your final piece straight away, why not have a play with a few at all scales first, then you can choose which to use for your final piece. Here are a few suggestions for mediums to try - check out our Pinterest or search Google for some styles.

Try one of these Or perhaps a mix of a few!

Line Drawing | Ink Drawing | Dot Drawing | Illustration. Collage | Mixed Media

Wire | Acrylic Painting | . Watercolour Painting | Oil Painting | Linocut

Mono Print | . Screen Printing | Textiles | Clay/3D | Digital | Photography

Check out our Pinterest or online for some more ideas & further info on each one!

Scale noun, verb Size or Measurement; the relationship of the size of a map, drawing, or model of something compared to the size of the actual thing. Eg: The model was built at a 1-foot-to-1-inch (1:12) scale.

Or choose a portrait style to get inspired by:

Pop Art | Surrealist & Fantasy / Fiction | Graffiti / Street Art | Cubist |

Classic Renaissance | Anime | Graphic Novel / Comic Book Art

Why not visit Proper Sound to get inspired?

Can you spot any people or animal portraits there, for example on their products, records or clothing? Is there any portrait art there? What materials do they use? What colours? What style? How does it make you feel? What is your favourite thing about it?

Jon Turner is exhibiting in The Doll's House Art Gallery from October 1st - November 20th 2022. He creates fictional portraiture in an illustrative style. Visit his immersive installation or find out more about his exhibition here.

The Proper Small Print (full instructions)
  1. Collect your frame from Proper Sound. Please just take one for now so that everyone gets a chance to get involved! But follow Proper Sound and TDHAG social media (or ask a grown up to) so you can find out if there are some left over later on!

  2. Proper Sound will give you a bag containing a frame (keyring) and its pane

  3. If you have the means (i.e. pliers) please remove the connecting jump ring and ring and keep them for when your mini-masterpiece is returned to you!

  4. Cut a 5x3.5cm piece of paper (or whatever you’ll create on) and make your portrait! You could just draw round the pane to get the right size.

  5. Create your artwork, then Insert/stick down the finished piece in the space, insert the pane - or don’t if you don’t want to (but keep it safe in case you do one day!)

  6. Pop it in something protective like an envelope, foam or packaging and deliver/post to 130 Park Lane, Macclesfield, by January 8th 2023.

  7. We will endeavour to add a list of all artists online so please include your name in the package, on the back or front of the frame, but due to a potentially high volume of submissions and small space we won’t be able to mark pieces individually in the exhibition.

  8. If you’re a practising artist and you’d like us to share your work, please include your name and Facebook or Instagram handle and we’ll try to share it at @TheDollsHouseArtGallery. Or just tag us in a post!

  9. After the exhibition we’ll do our best to return pieces via a mini display at Proper Sound from which we will include all the artworks, however, ultimately we cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage at that time.
